Dietary Supplement Industry Self-Regulation: How the National Advertising Division is Helping

Partner John Villafranco authored the Nutritional Outlook article, “Industry Self-Regulation.” The article discusses the initiative established in 2006 by the Council for Responsible Nutrition (“CRN”) and the Better Business Bureau’s National Advertising Division (“NAD”) to promote self-regulation within the industry. John evaluates the success of the initiative after seven years. The author states that in order for the NAD program to thrive and fully realize its objective, supplement companies will need to embrace the role of advertising challenger. Once they do so, the industry will be a whole lot closer to discontinuing claims that do not meet high standards for truthfulness and accuracy.
