Trump on Trade
The International Economy
Senior advisor Greg Mastel authored an article for The International Economy “Trump on Trade.” The article notes that, while President-Elect Donald Trump has made international trade a primary issue during his campaign, his positions have been widely criticized by both Democrats and Republicans. Greg takes a look at his positions and examines if the ae really ill-conceived, or if there might be some substantive as well as political merit. He examines Trump’s trade positions through the four main themes: 1.) The entire trading system is broken; 2) New FTAs (particularly the Trans-Pacific Partnership) should be scrapped; 3) Existing FTAs (particularly NA FTA) should be abandoned or greatly altered; and 4) The relationship with China needs to be fundamentally rebuilt.
