The article provides a brief overview of the basic substantiation requirements for advertising claims for foods and dietary supplements. Also, the article includes summaries of the Federal Trade Commission’s (FTC) current guidance, on full-product versus ingredient testing, and recent FTC consent orders that set forth a new standard for using ingredient testing. Lastly, the article addresses the practical implications of the FTC’s current guidance and the new standard.
