Lauren Schadt is an associate in the firm’s New York office, focusing her practice on complex commercial litigation. Her practice spans a diverse array of issues such as breach of contract, real estate, fraudulent transfer, and civil tort claims in state and federal courts across the United States. She has experience in all stages of complex civil litigation matters including pre-suit investigation, dispositive motion practice, discovery, trials, fee disputes, and settlement negotiations. She has significant trial experience, having contributed to multiple trials in federal district court.
Lauren also engages in environmental matters such as emerging contaminants, natural resource damages, and administrative rules and regulations. She serves on multiple teams that represent states and territories in cases related to per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), both in standalone lawsuits and in multidistrict litigation, including a large trial in the District of New Jersey.
Lauren has served on the legal teams representing multiple states—including New Jersey and North Carolina—in prosecuting fraudulent transfer claims against DuPont, Chemours, New DuPont, and Corteva arising out of corporate restructurings undertaken in an attempt to insulate DuPont’s valuable assets from its massive PFAS liabilities. She has extensive experience assessing the financial viability of potentially responsible parties and analyzing issues of successor liability.
Lauren is active within the firm’s pro bono practice in women’s rights, immigration, and criminal matters, including drafting an amicus curiae brief in support of a grant of certiorari at the U.S. Supreme Court in a criminal justice case on behalf of an incarcerated client seeking redress for violations of his constitutional rights.
Previously, Lauren gained broad experience in Family Court, interning both for the Center for Family Representation, and the NYC Administration for Children’s Services.
Served as trial counsel for the State of New Jersey in prosecuting New Jersey’s case against DuPont for knowingly discharging PFAS and other contamination from DuPont’s Chambers Works site into the waters and environment of New Jersey for decades. Following a month of trial in federal court in Camden, DuPont and related companies agreed to a record setting settlement with New Jersey valued at $2 billion in remediation, restoration, costs, and damages. On the eve of this trial, 3M settled-out for up to $450 million more in PFAS damages to New Jersey. At $2 billion, DuPont’s settlement with New Jersey is the largest environmental recovery for a single plaintiff – and is one of the largest legal recoveries of any kind – in the history of the country.
Served on team that successfully defended a multivendor sales and marketing company in a damages trial in the Southern District of New York.
Serving as Special Counsel to the Attorney General of New Jersey representing the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection in a series of actions related to statewide-PFAS contamination, including litigation brought against DuPont and Chemours related to PFOA contamination at and from their Chambers Works facility and several other industrial facilities in New Jersey.
Serving on team representing the State of North Carolina in litigation in North Carolina Superior Court seeking relief against DuPont and Chemours for pervasive GenX contamination from their manufacturing plant in Fayetteville, North Carolina.
