Partner Kathy Cannon Quoted in Law360 Article on Chinese Filing Cabinet Duties
Partner Kathy Cannon was quoted in the Law360 article “US Slaps Early-Stage Duties On Chinese Filing Cabinets.” Thursday, July 25, the U.S. Department of Commerce set preliminary duties topping out at 227% on imports of Chinese filing cabinets, after finding that the goods have been unfairly subsidized and sold at artificially low prices in the U.S. market. Commerce’s findings stem from a petition filed in May by Iowa-based Hirsh Industries LLC, a filing cabinet manufacturer that said unfairly traded imports from China were nudging it out of the market.
Kathy stated that Hirsh was “very pleased” with the preliminary findings, further stating that, “these remedial duties are critical to Hirsh and other U.S. producers who have lost substantial sales and revenues to low prices imports from China. We don’t know why there has been no participation by respondents but it could be that they have little to say in response given the large subsidies, dumping and resultant injury they have caused.“
The duty margins released by Commerce on Thursday are only preliminary, and the agency is slated to issue its final findings by Oct. 7.
