Law360 Mentions $30 Million Lawsuit Dismissal Against Hallmark by Former Professional Figure Skater
A California judge dismissed a $30 million lawsuit filed by former pro figure skating champion Oksana Baiul. In 2015, Baiul filed the lawsuit alleging that Hallmark operator Crown Media Holdings, Inc. and Sonar Entertainment failed to provide her with her alleged share of the revenue generated by a 1994 film based on her life.
The lawsuit asserted claims for breach of contract and fraud in connection with the movie. Baiul alleged that she was entitled to 30 percent of the revenue generated by the film, after deducting certain costs. Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Daniel Murphy declared that Baiul is neither a party to the relevant agreement for the 1994 movie nor a third-party beneficiary.
