Law360 Features D.C. Managing Partner Kathleen W. Cannon on the Value of Summer Associate Programs
Partner Kathleen W. Cannon was featured in the Law360 article “5 Things Firms Stand To Lose By Axing Summer Associates.” In light of some firms doing away with summer associate programs, this article outlines the benefits of hiring the young would-be lawyers. Ms. Cannon discusses Kelley Drye’s stance, saying that, “We’ve had this discussion over the years about the value of the summer program and whether we should keep it or just move to hiring laterals, and we’ve always come back to thinking that there is value in it and we continue to have it. I think it’s an important part of hiring lawyers, training them and bringing them along.” She also speaks to some of the benefits of hiring summer associates, such as their valuable skills sets, recruiting, firm culture, and the fact that they are willing, enthusiastic workers. “They are smart, they’re energetic and they really want to learn,” Ms. Cannon said. “They’ve come to you with all this energy and focus and I think it’s great to be able to be able to have attorneys like that. They want to learn and they want to dig in.”
