Immigration Equality Honors Kelley Drye With Safe Haven Award
Kelley Drye was one of four law firms to receive Immigration Equality’s 2024 Safe Haven Award for pro bono work on behalf of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered people seeking political asylum in the United States. The honorees were recognized at the organization’s annual gala, where Kelley Drye’s Pro Bono Counsel Marisa Lorenzo accepted the award on the firm’s behalf.
Immigration Equality is the leading LGBTQ and HIV-positive immigrant rights organization in the country, providing advice and legal services to thousands of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and HIV-positive immigrants seeking refuge, fair treatment, and freedom in the United States.
Last year, more than 20 Kelley Drye attorneys and professionals spent over 630 hours on 14 Immigration Equality matters, continuing the long-running partnership between the firm and the organization. The firm’s work culminated in three grants of asylum for Immigration Equality clients.
“We are so grateful to be able to work closely with Immigration Equality on a number of asylum cases, to learn from their extremely talented attorneys, and to play a small role in furthering the organization’s mission,” Lorenzo said. “We are proud of the work we have done to help LGBTQ and HIV-positive asylum seekers facing persecution in their home countries and look forward to continuing this important work together.”
