Ira Kasdan is a partner in the firm's Washington, D.C. office. He focuses his practice on complex civil litigation and alternative dispute resolution before federal and state courts, private arbitration and mediation services, and government agencies.

Mr. Kasdan has represented corporations and individuals in matters involving complex breach of contract, fraud, misrepresentation and related tort claims, as well as in disputes involving telecommunications law, real property, non-competition contract clauses, the theft of high-tech trade secrets and allegations of false advertising.

In addition, Mr. Kasdan counsels clients in the increasingly contentious area of animal-related laws (federal and state), and has considerable experience with issues arising under the Endangered Species Act, Marine Mammal Protection Act and Animal Welfare Act.
Representative Experience
Devised and implemented a litigation strategy for a NASDAQ-listed IT vendor in a case against another NASDAQ-listed company involving breach of contract and fraud claims. Resulted in favorable settlement recovery in excess of $5 million.

Defended a software company in an arbitration involving three parties and alleging breach of contract and related claims. An aggressive litigation stance resulted in dismissal of all claims against client with no liability.

Defended a small high-tech start-up company against charges that it stole trade secrets, forcing plaintiff, a subsidiary of an AMEX-listed company, to dismiss its lawsuit and pay partial legal fees.

Served as a member of a team of lawyers with a pivotal drafting and research role in connection with a $70 million international arbitration award to a NYSE-listed telecommunications client.

Defended a former bank CEO, who departed the bank after its takeover, against breach of contract and related charges resulting in the bank's agreement to make all severance payments due under the CEO's contract, plus attorneys' fees.

Served as lead attorney in three related actions involving federal and state securities law, fraud, RICO, and breach of contract claims resulting in a total recovery for the client in excess of $1 million.

Served as lead counsel in defending one of the largest independent oil companies in the United States in a multimillion-dollar lawsuit brought by a major U.S. refiner. Won case for client on motion for summary judgment. Served as lead attorney in filing a petition before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit challenging proposed OSHA regulations. Obtained a stay and ultimately, on the strength of the arguments in the Court of Appeals petition, OSHA withdrew the proposed regulations.

Served as co-counsel in a commercial arbitration involving the split-up of partners in a real estate management company. Client received management control over properties from which his former partner had sought to exclude him.

Served as lead attorney for a NYSE-listed company in a multi-party FERC "market power" proceeding. Obtained Administrative Law Judge opinion favorable to the client.

Advised a NYSE-listed corporation on Year 2000 strategies.

Supervised the drafting and implementation of a documents retention program for subsidiaries of a Fortune 100 client.

Obtained "exception relief" for various oil companies under the Department of Energy regulations during the era of federal price controls over oil and petroleum products. Also defended many of those companies against government enforcement actions leading to favorable settlements for those clients.
