# House Energy and Commerce Committee Passes Data Security Bill

On Wednesday, March 29, 2006, the House Energy and Commerce Committee approved legislation intended to curb identity theft and its resulting harms. The bill, entitled the ​“Data Accountability and Trust Act” or ​“DATA,” incorporates changes from a Manager’s Amendment that was circulated earlier in the month and would impose data protection, investigation, and notice obligations on businesses and information brokers.
