# New U.S. Policy on Armed Drone Exports Steals the Spotlight – but Changes are Coming for Commercial UAS Too

Partner [Eric McClafferty](/Our-People/Eric-McClafferty) co-authored the *Metropolitan Corporate Counsel* article *​“*New U.S. Policy on Armed Drone Exports Steals the Spotlight – but Changes Are Coming for Commercial UAS Too.” The article point outs an important development with the Wasenaar Arrangement, an international agreement that establishes export controls on certain dual-use items. In December, the participating states agreed to liberalize restrictions on commercial unmanned aerial systems (UAS) in recognition of the proliferation of drone technology and the over-control of small drones. While the change has not yet become law, Eric and Rob note that the new export control standards reflect the spread of unmanned technologies, the importance of supporting domestic manufacturers, and increasing demand in the defense and commercial sectors for unmanned technologies.
