## Petition to List Sperm Whales in the Gulf of Mexico As a Distinct Population Segment

In this featured report, Special Counsel [Wayne D’Angelo](/Our-People/Wayne-J-D-Angelo) discusses the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) and the National Marine Fisheries Service’s (NMFS) authority to divide species into ​“distinct population segments” in order to designate those segments as Endangered Species, and the current petition before those agencies to apply that designation to Sperm Whale in the Gulf of Mexico.
