# Conducting a Layoff Without Landing in Court

The article addresses practical steps employers should take when engaging in a reduction in force (RIF). It covers statutory obligations and local labor laws and sets forth six steps that employers should take with RIFs. The article also discusses severance packages and the Older Worker’s Benefit Protection Act. Finally, it provides guidelines for implementing RIFs with advice to plan, train and document the relevant decisions and acts.
