# Basic Steps in E-discovery Continued: Legal Hold Policies Where Information Is Within the Company, in a Cloud or on a Social Media Site

This is the third and final article in a series on e-discovery, published in *The Metropolitan Corporate Counsel*. The authors outline legal hold guidelines. Legal holds are communications from legal counsel to an organization that suspends the normal disposition or processing of records. Legal holds are issued with current or anticipated litigation, audits and investigation to avoid spoliation or destruction of evidence. The article addresses legal holds with cloud computing (when information is hosted with a third party data center) and with social media, such as Facebook.
