# Kelley Drye Noted in Wall Street Journal for Victory in Tafas Lawsuit against USPTO

The *Wall Street Journal* law blog notes partner William Golden for his successful representation of independent inventor, Triantafyllos Tafas, in an article titled ​“Patent Lawyers Do the Boogie as Court Shoots Down PTO Rules.” The article discusses U.S. District Judge James C. Cacheris’ decision to grant Kelley Drye’s motion for summary judgment. This ruling voided the new rules published by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO), which limited the number of patent claims and continuations in an application.

The judge ruled the changes were substantive not procedural, thus exceeded the USPTO’s authority. The rules were scheduled to go into effect in November 2007, but on the day after the rules were published, Tafas, represented by Kelley Drye, filed a lawsuit against the USPTO to block the new rules.
