# DailyDeal Quotes Partner Gonzalo E. Mon on LivingSocial and Groupon Consumer Protection Issues

A *Daily Deal* article titled ​“LivingSocial Hit with Groupon-Like Class Action Suit,” referenced partner Gonzalo E. Mon’s recent [AdLaw Access blog post](http://www.adlawaccess.com/2011/02/articles/gift-cards/recent-lawsuits-allege-groupon-and-livingsocial-violate-gift-certificate-laws/). The article discussed the recent class action law suit claiming that LivingSocial is violating consumer protection laws by including expiration dates on their certificates, and essentially cheating customers out of leftover funds.

Mr. Mon’s blog entry ​“[Recent Lawsuits Allege Groupon and LivingSocial Violate Gift Certificate Laws](http://www.adlawaccess.com/2011/02/articles/gift-cards/recent-lawsuits-allege-groupon-and-livingsocial-violate-gift-certificate-laws/),” discussed the nature of the LivingSocial class action suit, and explained that approximately half the states have laws that either restrict or prohibit expiration dates. In addition, a recent federal law requires gift certificates to be valid for at least five years. Mr. Mon also noted that these lawsuits demonstrate that plaintiff’s lawyers are attempting to stretch gift certificate laws to cover various types of offers that don’t fit the traditional mold of gift certificates.
