State Data Breach Laws Are Much Alike, But Differ on Some Key Details

In 2002, California lived up to its reputation as a consumer-friendly state when it enacted the nation’s first information breach notification law. In light of the many highly publicized data security breaches that have occurred across the country since that law went into effect, it is not surprising that, as of November 2005, 21 states have followed suit implementing their own notification laws, though not all have taken effect yet.
