NMFS Can’t Climb Out of Hole at Summit

The article discussed the recent Fisherman Summit at the New Bedford Whaling Museum, held on March 8, 2010. The summit brought over 300 fisherman, and over 20 people spoke on the issues facing the fishing industry. The article discussed the overall consensuses amongst fisherman is that the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) needs to work to build trust with the industry by treating fisherman with respect and to focus on science. It suggested that now is the time for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) to make it a priority to invest in science-based management to help preserve and create economic opportunity, which would also be a great way to show fishermen the respect they desire.
