In 2009, associate Matthew J. Basile established Building Bridges Worldwide, a nonprofit organization that organizes and funds service projects around the world.
Building Bridges is initially focusing on providing service opportunities and support for communities in Nicaragua and New Orleans.
For its first project, Building Bridges has partnered with two charitable organizations, Fabretto Children’s Foundation and buildOn, to construct a school in the village of El Lajero, Nicaragua. After Building Bridges’ volunteers complete the building of the school, Fabretto will manage the daily operational responsibilities of running the school by providing teachers and school supplies.
Fabretto has been working in Nicaragua for over 50 years and operates more than 40 schools with over 6,000 students throughout the country. On April 17 – 24, 2010, Mr. Basile will lead a group of volunteers to Nicaragua for the project’s groundbreaking ceremony.
On March 19, 2010, Building Bridges hosted a fundraising event at Traffic NYC to raise $30,000 for the cost of construction materials and labor to build the school.
