Variety Quotes Partner Andrew M. White on Defamation Issues of Real Housewives' Russell Armstrong

In an article "Death Reveals Behind-the-Scenes Drama on 'Real Housewives,'" Variety magazine reported Russell Armstrong threatened defamation lawsuits against cast members of the "Real Housewives of Beverly Hills" if they talked about his marital problems on camera. Mr. Armstrong committed suicide on August 15. Partner Andrew M. White, chair of the firm's Entertainment and Media practice group, discussed defamation actions involving reality television. He noted that reality show contracts give producers enormous latitude in using footage and that participants often waive their rights to defamation suits in contracts they sign to get onto the show. The article noted Mr. White represented ABC against a similar claim filed by a participant in "Extreme Makeover."
