article “NOAA decision could trigger largest scallop harvest in 14 years.” NOAA’s decision of which areas off of the coast of New England will be opened or closed for the upcoming scallop season may be the difference between a another good season or the biggest harvest since the 2004-05 season. While conservation groups believe Closed Area I should remain closed, Drew, who represents many of New England’s limited access scallop fishermen at the Center for Sustainable Fisheries, believes NOAA should open it. "We're talking about shifting to areas that most scientific analysis says would be better for sea life as the higher density of scallops means less sweeping and less bycatch,” Drew said.
