Partner Lee S. Brenner was interviewed on The Rachel Maddow Show discussing the Gawker invasion of privacy case brought by Hulk Hogan, First Lady Melania Trump’s libel lawsuit against Daily Mail, and the impact of those cases on the press and to First Amendment rights.
In 2012, the gossip website Gawker became notorious for posting and later refusing to take down former wrestler Hulk Hogan’s sex tape; subsequently, Hogan pursued an invasion of privacy lawsuit that resulted in a $140 million verdict against Gawker in 2016. Additionally, Melania Trump is proceeding with a libel lawsuit against Daily Mail in which she seeks at least $150 million.
Maddow and Brenner discussed the ramifications of those opinions and whether a new trend exists.
