DataGuidance Quotes Partner John J. Heitmann on Privacy Bill of Rights
February 23, 2012

Partner John J. Heitmann was quoted in the DataGuidance article, “White House Privacy Bill of Rights a ‘Critical Building Block.’” The article discusses the ‘Consumer Privacy Bill of Rights,’ issued by the Obama Administration on February 22, 2012, which is part of a comprehensive blueprint designed to protect individual rights while ensuring that the internet remains competitive and allowing for interoperability between the U.S. privacy framework and others.

Mr. Heitmann commented, “the long-awaited White House White Paper and Privacy Bill of Rights should be welcome by enterprises and consumers in the U.S.and abroad, as it establishes a modern FIPPs-based set of privacy 'bill of rights' and a flexible regulatory framework where self-regulatory codes of conduct developed through multi-stakeholder processes and meaningful enforcement will play a key role.”

This framework “should provide the international community with a compelling alternative to more prescriptive and difficult to implement approaches recently embraced by the EU,” Mr. Heitmann also noted.
