On March 8, 2012, partner John J. Heitmann presented at the International Association of Privacy Professionals Global Privacy Summit in Washington, D.C. In his session, "Take Two - Employees, Smart Phones and Social Media: Best Practices for Mobile Computing and Social Media Policies," Mr. Heitmann discussed the challenges and opportunities that mobility and social media present to employers. Companies must consider the best ways to mitigate privacy and information security risks raised by adopting new usage models for mobile and social media technologies. A well-designed policy document is among the best tools available to mitigate risk. The discussion provided an overview of mobile computing and social media best practices, with a focus on location-based services and other key challenges. It also provided participants with an understanding of the latest legal developments related to monitoring employee emails, texts, and technology and a knowledge base in best practices for creating both an effective mobile computing policy and an effective social media policy.
