Associate Erika Marie Stallings will speak at the Hereditary Breast & Ovarian Cancer: From Genetics to Pop Culture event. The presentation will discuss BRCA-related cancer risks and management, while exploring what has occurred in the over 20 years since the discovery of BRCA1/2 and where we hope to be 20 years from now. Hot topics will include the impact of celebrity genetic testing on awareness (Angelina Jolie, Kardashians, Christina Applegate), the effect of the Supreme Court’s ruling on gene patents (Association for Molecular Pathology v. Myriad Genetics) and the passage of the Genetic Information Nondiscrimination Act, new presidential initiatives related to precision medicine and “moonshot to cure cancer,” continuing discussions about population testing in the Jewish community and availability of testing in minority populations, and research advances in medical oncology, surgery, immunotherapy. Hon. Barbara Jaffe (Acting Justice, New York State Supreme Court) is the moderator, and the other speakers include Susan Domchek, MD (Executive Director, Basser Center for BRCA at Penn Medicine) and Kathie-Ann Joseph, MD, MPH, FACS (Chief, Breast Surgery at Bellevue Hospital).
