We encourage and support pro bono work; it helps to fulfill a societal need, and provides excellent and diverse legal experience to attorneys at all levels. The Firm treats pro bono matters with the same importance as those for other clients, and makes all of its resources available for these matters.
Associates may handle new pro bono cases in which they have a special interest or work on those already approved by the Firm’s pro bono coordinating partner. Agencies which regularly refer matters to the Firm include: Network for Women’s Services; Lawyers’ Committee for Human Rights; MFY (Mobilization for Youth) Legal Services; inMotion; U.S. District Court pro bono panels; The Legal Aid Society; Volunteer Lawyers for the Arts; Partnership for the Homeless; Brooklyn Legal Services; and the September 11th Fund. The Firm’s collaboration with Partnership for the Homeless, a legal clinic at a shelter in Manhattan, was featured in a recent New York Law Journal article.
During the 2003 summer program, Kelley Drye took on two cases through inMotion specifically for summer associates. While work on those cases was supervised by Kelley Drye associates, summer associates had the opportunity to attend training seminars, conduct client meetings and attend court appearances.
