Crazy Copyright Cases

May 1, 2012 | California Lawyer

This article reviews some of the strangest (and often humorous) copyright cases, mostly in the creative fields. It discusses several lawsuits, noteworthy in how truly bizarre they are. This includes (to describe just a few examples) efforts to copyright a "sqrat," a squirrel-rat hybrid character, an attempt to copyright silence, assertions of copyright for works of God, and even copyright claims for Bikram, hot yoga poses. The authors' introduction states, "There is no shortage of wonderfully weird disputes in this area, and the handful summarized here all deserve a place in the annals of copyright history."
