Kelley Drye & Warren LLP is pleased to announce that John F. Ward and Michael J. Zinna, the principals of intellectual property boutique Ward & Zinna, LLC, have joined the firm as partners. They will be based in the firm’s New York and New Jersey offices. Mr. Ward and Mr. Zinna focus their practices on all aspects of intellectual property law, including complex patent litigation, post-grant review proceedings before the U.S. Patent Trial & Appeal Board (PTAB), trademark litigation, IP licensing, and the management of domestic and international IP portfolios.
“John and Michael will strengthen Kelley Drye’s patent and trademark litigation bench and enhance the depth of intellectual property services we offer clients,” said firm managing partner Lew Rose. “We are delighted to welcome them to the firm as we continue to grow in strategic areas of law.”
With over 30 years of experience, Mr. Ward has been involved in several of the largest patent litigations ever tried. He has litigated patent, trademark, copyright and unfair competition cases at both the trial and appellate levels and overseen intellectual property litigation in numerous foreign jurisdictions. As a registered patent attorney, Mr. Ward has extensive experience successfully representing both petitioners and patentees in proceedings before the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office. He is among the minority of attorneys who have successfully kept clients’ patents from being invalidated during post-grant review proceedings. He has advised clients ranging in size from the largest multinational corporations to individual artists and inventors. Mr. Ward also advises clients on the procurement of intellectual property rights, portfolio development and licensing.
Mr. Ward said, “Michael and I are excited to serve our clients within a practice that functions as an IP boutique with the benefit of big firm resources. We look forward to complementing an already strong group of IP attorneys across Kelley Drye’s offices.”
Mr. Zinna’s practice encompasses all facets of intellectual property, with a focus on patent and trademark litigation, procurement, clearance and licensing. In particular, he has extensive experience representing his clients in patent litigation against non-practicing entities (NPEs). Mr. Zinna also represents patent holders and petitioners in post-grant review proceedings before the PTAB and handles opposition and cancellation proceedings before the U.S. Trademark Trial & Appeal Board (TTAB). In addition to his patent and trademark docket, Mr. Zinna litigates trade dress, copyright and unfair competition cases, and advises clients on branding strategy and patent design-around options. He was named a Rising Star by New Jersey Super Lawyers from 2011-2014.
“Kelley Drye shares our commitment to serving clients with efficiency and pragmatism. John and I are excited to be working alongside such accomplished attorneys who share our philosophy and excel at executing it across multiple practice areas,” said Mr. Zinna.
Mr. Ward and Mr. Zinna also bring patent attorneys with them from their firm to Kelley Drye. Frank Morris joins as special counsel and David G. Lindenbaum joins as a senior associate. Jay Mehr and Keith DiConsiglio of Major, Lindsey & Africa assisted in the recruitment of Mr. Ward and Mr. Zinna.
