Kelley Drye partner Daniel Schimmel and Judge, Secretary General of the Institute for High Judicial Studies in France Antoine Garapon will hold a vivid, lively discussion comparing and contrasting the U.S. and French legal systems. For example, did you know the judge participates in the jury proceedings in France? Good idea or bad idea? You decide. After listening to these legal scholars who’ll read transcripts, and show images and video clips, you’ll know more about French and U.S. courts and cultures and perhaps may have better ideas on how to improve your legal system.
Judge Garapon was appointed by the former prime minister of France to create the Institute for High Judicial Studies, a well respected think tank for stimulating research on judicial issues and challenges. He has been active in promoting cooperation between French and American judges and has published the book, “Judger en Amérique et en France. Culture juridique française et common law,” (co-authored by Ioannis Papadopoulos), with an introduction by Justice Stephen Breyer. Antoine Garapon also manages the collection Bien commun at Michalon Publishing Co. and is editor of the journal Esprit. He hosts a weekly radio program, “Le Bien Commun,” on French culture.
Daniel Schimmel is a partner at Kelley Drye in New York, focusing on international arbitration, litigation and internal investigations. Mr. Schimmel is a member of advisory committees to the French Judicial Center on International Discovery and International Arbitration topics and a member of a task force to the International Chamber of Commerce Arbitration Commission. He represents Lawyers Without Borders at the United Nations. Mr. Schimmel has participated in pro bono training for lawyers, prosecutors and judges in Liberia, Sierra Leone, the Office of the Prosecutor of the UN International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda and the Prosecution Division of the International Criminal Court in The Hague.
