Nancy Lutz is a partner in the firm's Washington, D.C. office. She protects clients' trademarks, copyrights, and domain names, including the new gTLDs, on a worldwide basis by developing legal strategies to meet their business needs.

Ms. Lutz manages large, worldwide portfolios of well-known sporting goods, apparel, telecommunications and other trademarks; evaluates and purchases intellectual property; supervises investigations of infringers; and negotiates licenses and other agreements. She also conducts due diligence reviews of domestic and foreign intellectual property relating to corporate acquisitions and divestitures and secured transactions.

Ms. Lutz represents clients in inter partes proceedings before the Trademark Trial and Appeal Board (TTAB) and in Uniform Domain Name Resolution (UDRP) actions. She also oversees complex foreign litigation and opposition and cancellation proceedings. As an associate, Ms. Lutz was a member of teams that litigated trademark infringement, unfair competition and trade dress issues before federal district courts and the U.S. International Trade Commission.

Professional Activities

Enjoys speaking domestically and internationally on strategic considerations in selecting, clearing, and registering trademarks on a global basis, gTLDs,  IP due diligence and the profits and perils connected with licensing.

INTA Lefkowitz Moot Court Competition, Editor, Bench Memo, 2007-08; Vice-Chair, 2008-09; Chair, 2009-10.

Tested and developed anti-counterfeiting curriculum at D.C. high school as a member of INTA's partnership with Street Law, Inc. to bring INTA's Unreal campaign to high school classrooms across the U.S.

George Mason University School of Law, Guest Lecturer on International Strategy: Trademark & Filings, 2012 and 2014.

Community Activities

Taught English as a second language and prepared students to sit for the General Education Development (GED) test.

Raised thousands of dollars for charities by participating in various sporting events, including running the Marine Corps Marathon, biking from Raleigh, North Carolina to Washington, DC and skating from Athens to Atlanta, Georgia.

Currently involved in activities relating to providing hospitality to the homeless.

Selected as one of The Best Lawyers in America in the Copyright Law and Trademark Law areas, 2010-2015.

Contributed to the book Domain Names Rewired as a "thought leader" to predict trends in doing business and advise on protecting trademarks on the Internet that is greatly expanded by the introduction of the new gTLDs.

Pro Bono

Has provided pro bono legal counseling to the Footprints in the Sand Foundation, Injured Marines Semper Fi Fund, and Children of God Relief Fund.
